We are deeply troubled by the recent circulation of an image that appears to glorify violence and to frame federal agents as executioners rather than officers bound by law. Such representations erode the basic civic principle that the use of force in a democracy is constrained by due process, accountability, and respect for human dignity. Equally concerning is the use of language labeling members of the community as “traitors,” a term historically tied to the dehumanization of political opponents and the justification of violence against them. Disagreement over policy is legitimate; rhetoric that casts people as enemies of the nation is not. Together with other campus centers, the Unit for Criticism affirms that our campus community must remain a space where political debate does not slide into the normalization of violence, and where the safety and belonging of all students are taken seriously.
