Her research spans musical exchanges between China and the West in the 20th and 21st centuries, the modernization of Chinese traditional music, Chinese diaspora music, and music and national identity. Her theoretical interests center on developing decolonial and anti-extractive approaches to global music history that foreground relational knowledge matrices and resist decontextualization. She holds an M.M. in Musicology from the Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University, and an M.F.A. and B.A. in Erhu Performance from the China Conservatory of Music.
